Pickwell primarily creates on canvas using acrylic paint and oil paint while also experimenting with oil pastels, water colour and chalk. She uses sponges and stencils in various paintings helping to create floral designs in many ways. Experimenting with watercolour and pencil Pickwell creates paintings to help further her ideas before completing final outcomes. The use of various mediums allows her artworks to build texture and depth, adding layers on her paintings.
Her practice is inspired by an interest in multiple bright colours to communicate evoking moods and feelings. Pickwell has a particular interest in how her work can influence a viewer’s thoughts and emotions due to the aesthetic design of her paintings.
The repetition of multiple flowers within each of her paintings allows the work to remain open ended, meaning the flowers are forever growing. To Pickwell, this brings her comfort, however viewers will respond with their own individual feelings towards her art.
